Introduction to Ecotourism for Tour Operators
This course targets tour operators who are interested in exploring the potential of the ecotourism market for their business.
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Understand what ecotourism is
- Assess the potential ecotourism market for tour operators
- Recognise the challenges of greenwashing and importance of ecolabel certification
Ecotourism has been defined as responsible travel to natural areas which conserves the environment and improves the welfare of the local people. This workshop will explore the concept of ecotourism and the tourist understanding of and expectation of an ecotourism experience. The workshop will examine all angles of the wide ranging ecotourism sector and its growth in today’s competitive tourism & travel market.
The workshop will outline how to manage and market an ecotourism product to fulfill the expectations of the ecotourism and develop a long term sustainable business relationship. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the term ‘greenwashing’ and the particular challenges it presents to tour operators venturing into this market. Participants will particularly focus on the importance of offering authentic ecolabelled packages to the discerning buyer in this market, highlighting the role certification provides as an assurance of a quality product.
